The data product

The installed base, counted.

A unit-level census of field and gathering compression across 12 basins, reconciled to the public record and refreshed quarterly. The dataset no analyst, vendor, or operator has today.

The upstream data platforms stop at production volumes and commodity prices. The ERP systems capture every invoice and benchmark none of them. Between the two sits the number that decides whether an operating line is any good: what it should cost. Nobody sold that number, so we built the census that produces it.

The spec sheet
01

Scope

Field and gathering compression, ≥200 HP, excluding processing-plant and transmission compression, reconciled bottom-up.

02

Coverage

12 major US onshore basins. Oklahoma gives coverage; Appalachia gives credibility (the reconciliation anchors below are why).

03

Refresh

Quarterly, with adds and removals tracked. The installed base moves monthly, which is why lifecycle tracking makes the census a subscription and not a file you buy once.

04

Confidence

A confidence score on every row, trained on confirmed field-verified units. You always know how much weight a row will bear.

Schema: unit-level rows — basin, installed horsepower, owned versus contract, assigned vendor, confidence.

Bottom-up and auditable, not a survey.

The method is bottom-up and auditable, not a survey. In Appalachia, where company-stated totals run thick enough to check the work, the census reconciles against them: land inside a defensible band with every delta explained, and the methodology is proven where anyone can test it. That is what Appalachia is for.

Ask for a single basin and we will send real rows: horsepower, ownership, assigned vendor, confidence, scope stated. Twenty rows in front of your team answers the question faster than anything we could write here.

Ground Truth

How contributions sharpen it

Field-verified rows raise coverage and confidence for every buyer. Contribute your fleet or contract data through Ground Truth and it enters the common census on the same terms as every other row; in exchange, the contribution is credited against your subscription price. The credit is a price lever, not a data privilege. Nobody buys early access, and nobody sees rows the rest of the market cannot.

FIG. 01 — THE FLYWHEEL, CONTINUOUS

One census, sold the same way to everyone who reads this market. Same rows, same price, published scope. No exclusivity, no early access, no side deals. That is why an analyst can cite it and a vendor can trust it.

How to get it

The aggregate number is free in the Denominator Report. The read on it is Nominally Hedged. The rows come by coverage: one basin, the full category, or the enterprise feed with API and warehouse delivery. Paid tiers are request pricing at launch.
